New Footage of Brown University Gunman Emerges
Recently released dashcam footage shows Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, the gunman from Brown University, nonchalantly walking through a campus parking lot just moments after he fatally shot two students during a finals event in December.
The 48-year-old Neves Valente can be seen in the video, which was obtained by ABC News. Two students lost their lives, and nine others sustained injuries when gunfire erupted inside a classroom adjacent to the Barth and Hawley building.
The footage captures him crossing right in front of a Brown University shuttle bus, which recorded the brief seconds before it drove off into the street.
In the weeks leading up to the incident, the video shows Neves Valente walking along the sidewalk towards the residential area of the campus, with his right hand tucked deep in his pants pocket.
The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office indicates that the video was likely recorded shortly after the shooting took place.
ABC News acquired the footage through a public records request but pointed out that authorities generally deny access to additional records concerning the chaotic police response to the shooting.
Following the incident in Providence, Neves Valente traveled to Brookline, Massachusetts, where he shot and killed MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, 47, outside of his home.
Authorities later learned that Neves Valente and Loureiro had been students together at Portugal’s Institute of Advanced Technology, but the reasons behind targeting the professor remain unclear.
Police discovered a series of videotaped confessions recorded by Neves Valente moments before his suicide in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire. However, he did not mention Loureiro in those recordings.
In the videos, Neves Valente expresses his thoughts passionately, celebrating the execution of “six semesters” worth of plans and showing no remorse for the violence he inflicted on the three innocent individuals.
He states, “I already know what you’re going to say. Some people claim I’m mentally ill or something like that. That’s complete nonsense. It’s all bullshit and it’s not an excuse. I’m—I’m sane,” reflecting a disconcerting level of defiance.
The suspect hinted at having sent three emails to unnamed recipients describing his motive, but authorities have yet to reveal any details regarding these communications.
