Tomorrowland makeover at Disneyland halted by executives

Disney’s Tomorrowland Remains Unchanged

Plans to renovate Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, a staple of the park, have been shelved. Executives concluded that updates might not significantly boost visitor numbers, as reported by a major news outlet.

The first major update to Tomorrowland arrived in 1967, introducing attractions like the Carousel of Progress and PeopleMover, followed by another update in 1998 that included Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and Innoventions.

Many fans were anticipating a new overhaul—often dubbed “New New New Tomorrowland”—aimed for completion in 2020. Yet, Disney’s leadership ultimately decided a third substantial renovation wouldn’t warrant the financial outlay, despite some internal advocates for the project.

This choice highlights a shift in priorities for Walt Disney Imagineering, which traditionally focused on creativity but is now increasingly led by financial considerations.

Instead, the company is directing over $60 billion towards initiatives believed to stimulate growth. This includes expanding successful franchises, launching new cruise ships, and developing parks worldwide.

There’s a major emphasis on enhancing all six global resorts. Upcoming additions feature a Marvel attraction in Anaheim, a ride based on “Encanto” in Orlando, and a “Lion King” themed area in Paris. Plans also involve creating a new park in Abu Dhabi and expanding the cruise fleet from seven to thirteen ships.

Bruce Vaughn, head of Walt Disney Imagineering, stated that this period represents the most ambitious effort in the company’s history. He expressed commitment to revitalizing Imagineering culturally, emphasizing significant investments underway.
