It was quite an unusual experience.
Timothée Chalamet said that during a particularly intense scene in “Marty Supreme,” one of the extras confronted him. He mentioned, “I can’t disclose details, but in that motel scene, there were plenty of non-actors. It’s thrilling to work with them, but it often takes several takes to get the best out of them,” Chalamet, 30, shared in a Q&A with Robert Downey Jr., 60.
“I was really getting in the guy’s face, trying to provoke him. I kept thinking, ‘Director Josh Safdie’s not angry with me.’ Then we did another take, and the guy says, ‘I’ve just been in prison for 30 years.’ You really don’t want to mess with me; you really don’t want to see me angry,” he recounted with a laugh. “I turned to Josh and thought, ‘Oh my god, who am I up against?’”
On January 11, the actor took home a Golden Globe Award for his performance in “Marty Supreme,” which is in theaters now. The film, gaining acclaim, also received the Critics Choice Award on January 4 and is viewed as a strong contender for the Oscars.
Set in the 1950s in New York City, the film is loosely based on the table tennis player Marty Reisman, with Chalamet portraying the athlete. Odessa Azion, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Fran Drescher also feature in the movie.
Recently, Chalamet’s quirky behavior during the press tour raised some eyebrows. Just before Christmas, he was the first person to climb on top of the Las Vegas sphere.
“I’m trying to maximize this in every possible way, from merchandise to Zoom or media appearances,” he told IndieWire.
He also wore a striking orange outfit at the premiere alongside his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner (28), which later inspired a parody by “Hux” actress Megan Stalter, 35, and Paul W. Downs at a critics event.
Chalamet is anticipated to receive an Oscar nomination for this performance. The nominations will be revealed on January 22.
