Contractor Leaks Military Information
The Trump administration has disclosed that a contractor was responsible for leaking sensitive information about military operations in Venezuela earlier this month.
According to a report from The Washington Post, the FBI conducted a search of a journalist’s home as part of an investigation relating to Aurelio Perez-Lugones.
Perez-Lugones, who lived in Maryland, was working in a government contracting role as a systems engineer and IT specialist at the time of his arrest by federal authorities. A report from January indicated that he had been in possession of top-secret classified information dating back to at least 2000.
Federal prosecutors allege that he printed screenshots of confidential documents and transcribed sensitive information on notepads before bringing these papers home. During a search of his residence last week, authorities discovered multiple documents labeled as confidential, with one of them reportedly found in his lunchbox.
The criminal complaint suggested that the disclosed files pertained to “national defense,” though it did not specify if they were related to recent U.S. activities in Venezuela.
FBI Director Kash Patel made a statement regarding the arrest of the leaker and his connection to The Washington Post.
“This morning, the @FBI and our partners executed a search warrant against an individual at The Washington Post who was found to be receiving and reporting classified military information from government contractors, jeopardizing our warfighters and national security,” Patel noted.
During an interview with a news outlet, Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the leaker, identifying him as an IT contractor collaborating with the Department of the Army who allegedly relayed information concerning “foreign adversaries.”
Bondi mentioned that “great people at the FBI” executed search warrants at the reporter’s residence, confiscating devices that contained classified materials about a foreign threat.
The President added to the discussion, referring to the leaker as “a very egregious leaker,” suggesting that there might be “others” involved, and affirming that they would pursue them as well. He mentioned that the suspect could face a lengthy prison sentence.
Officials from the Trump administration confirmed that the individual implicated in the leak is currently in custody.
