Trump Unveils Great Health Care Plan

On Thursday, President Donald Trump revealed his Great Health Care Plan, which aims to tackle high drug prices and health insurance premiums, keep large insurance companies accountable, and enhance price transparency in healthcare.

“Instead of prioritizing the needs of big corporations and special interests, our plan will focus on the people,” Trump stated in a video about the Great Health Care Plan. “You’ll see more money in your pocket. The government will provide you with funds directly, which you can use to buy your own healthcare.”

This announcement comes amid ongoing struggles in Congress to address the escalating costs of healthcare. The government faced a shutdown when Democrats pushed for expanded Obamacare subsidies, initially introduced during the pandemic through Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which have been extended through various anti-inflation laws.

Trump’s initiative seeks to legalize several policies already in motion under his administration aimed at reducing drug costs and improving price transparency.

The Great Health Care Plan’s focus includes lowering prescription drug prices by implementing the Most Favored Nation Treaty, ensuring Americans benefit from the same low prices available in other countries. It also expands access to more validated medications for over-the-counter purchase.

According to the plan, taxpayer subsidies currently going to health insurance companies would instead be redirected directly to Americans, compelling them to select insurance plans that better reflect their preferences. It’s projected to lower health insurance premiums by at least 10% and save taxpayers about $36 billion, as suggested by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

The proposed legislation includes cost-sharing reduction payments, but Senate Democrats have resisted it, arguing it breaches the Byrd Rule, which requires a 60-vote threshold for inclusion in Trump’s significant bill this term.

In addition, the plan would eliminate kickbacks from pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) that artificially inflate health insurance costs.

Under the Great Health Care Plan, insurers would be mandated to display their profit margins from premiums prominently and provide comparisons of rates and coverage to assist consumers in selecting appropriate healthcare services. Additionally, insurance companies would need to disclose the percentage of claims they deny and the average waiting times for routine medical care.

Meanwhile, healthcare providers that accept Medicare or Medicaid will be required to post their prices visibly in their offices and ensure compliance with transparency standards set by insurers.

In 2024, former Senator Mike Braun (R-Ind.) remarked that formalizing Trump’s healthcare price transparency regulations would be even more impactful than Obamacare.
