Ocasio-Cortez Faces Criticism Over ICE Comments
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-identifying democratic socialist from New York, has come under significant fire for her remarks regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It’s interesting to note that this backlash stems from what some perceive as a failure to maintain her original extremist stance.
Ocasio-Cortez previously called for the abolition of ICE. However, some who once supported her are now suggesting that she’s moderating her views, perhaps aiming for a higher political office.
In her statements, she remarked, “It would be outrageous to pay thugs who are shooting mothers in the face on the street. That’s what this administration is doing, that’s what the Republicans are doing.”
Discussing ICE’s budget, she said, “My position has always been clear that ICE’s funding should be reduced. We’re examining the reckless surge in funding.” She emphasized that much of the extra money being spent is coming from health care premiums, stating, “Almost $1 trillion in health care subsidies were taken out and given to ICE.”
She concluded, “So understand how these dots connect. Getting screwed over to pay the thugs who are shooting moms in the face on the street. That’s what this administration is doing. That’s what the Republicans are doing.”
While right-leaning commentators may take issue with her depiction of ICE’s history, it’s surprising to see some leftists criticize her for not being progressive enough. For instance, former Al Jazeera reporter Sana Saeed remarked, “Reducing funding to fascist state agents who kidnap people and shoot people in the face doesn’t change their mission, their functions, or the immunity they are afforded. They are not operating on less money.”
Another activist, Anthony Zenkas, urged: “Don’t trust politicians who don’t call for a complete abolition of ICE. ‘Defunding’ is misleading. ICE is a militarized police force that terrorizes urban America. It needs to be completely defunded.”
Furthermore, comedian Kate Willett mentioned that Ocasio-Cortez continues to sell ‘Abolish ICE’ merchandise, questioning why her views might have changed. Another user expressed strong discontent with less-than-radical approaches, stating, “Abolish ICE. Anything else will not be tolerated!!”
On the other hand, a critic quipped about recent Democratic statements regarding public safety, pointing out perceived inconsistencies.
Efforts to reach Ocasio-Cortez’s office for clarification yielded no immediate response.
