Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Colina Machado recently presented a Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Donald Trump, describing it as a historical gesture that acknowledges his dedication to freedom and the battle against tyranny.

Speaking to the press outside the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, Machado reflected on their encounter and shared her thoughts on whether Trump should receive the Nobel Peace Prize. “I handed the medal to the president and mentioned how, 200 years ago, General Lafayette awarded Simon Bolivar a similar medal featuring George Washington’s likeness,” she said. “Bolivar valued that gift throughout his life, and you can even see it in his portraits.” Machado emphasized that the medal symbolizes the alliance between Americans and Venezuelans in their shared quest for liberty.

Her meeting with Trump took place just days after the U.S. detained Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, and it came at a time of uncertainty regarding Machado’s political trajectory. This was compounded by Trump’s earlier comments suggesting that Machado’s leadership capabilities might be in question. “Honestly, I find it hard to see her as our leader,” Trump remarked. “She’s nice, sure, but lacks respect and support back home.”

Machado declared, “The medal I presented to Trump represents the dedication of the Bolivarian people. We’ve honored his commitment to our freedoms over two centuries.” However, it’s important to note that Machado earlier speculated about passing this prestigious award to Trump during her Fox News appearance. When asked whether she would consider this, she responded that it had not been finalized yet.

Despite her plans, Norway’s Nobel Institute rejected Machado’s proposal, clarifying, “Once a Nobel Prize is awarded, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred.” They reinforced that this decision is definitive and irreversible.
