Tragic Incident Involves 11-Year-Old Charged with Murder
An 11-year-old boy faces murder charges after allegedly shooting his father in Pennsylvania. The incident reportedly occurred after the boy broke into the family’s gun safe to access a Nintendo Switch console.
Authorities found Douglas Dietz, 42, dead in his bed early on Tuesday morning, alongside his wife, who was understandably in shock. This heartbreaking event took place in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, as noted in court documents.
Police arrived at the home around 3:20 a.m. to discover Dietz with a gunshot wound to the head, while the boy, Clayton Dietz, was screaming in distress.
According to the documents, Clayton had been adopted by Dietz and his wife in 2018. He was heard exclaiming, “Daddy’s dead,” and telling his mother, “I killed daddy.”
The wife recounted to the police that Douglas was asleep until he was jolted awake by a loud noise. She mentioned a smell similar to fireworks in the room and attempted to nudge her husband.
As the situation unfolded, the wife observed that her husband was motionless and heard what she initially thought was water dripping, only to realize it was his blood soaking the sheets.
Remarkably, the incident occurred on Clayton’s birthday, January 13. His mother recalled that Douglas had just sung “Happy Birthday” to him before they went to bed soon after midnight.
Clayton described having a fun day with his parents but grew “angry” when his father insisted it was bedtime. In a startling confession, he acknowledged shooting “someone,” later clarifying that it was indeed his father.
During the investigation, Clayton explained that his Nintendo Switch was kept in the family’s gun safe. He sneaked out at night, retrieved the key from his father’s drawer, and managed to open the safe, where he found both the console and an unloaded firearm.
The affidavit detailed his admission of taking the gun, loading it, and then approaching his father’s side of the bed. In a moment of anger, he pulled back the hammer and fired.
He mentioned feeling overwhelmed and didn’t think about the consequences of his actions once he fired the shot.
Clayton’s mother was aware of the gun safe but did not know where the key was stored. Following the incident, Clayton was arrested and charged with murder. He has been denied bail and is set for a preliminary hearing on January 22, as per the criminal documents.
