Texas father, Jonathan Ross Mata, accidentally kills Amazon manager Desmond Butler, believing he was the kidnapper of his daughter.

Tragic Misunderstanding Leads to Fatal Shooting in Houston

A Texas father is accused of fatally shooting an innocent Amazon manager, mistakenly believing he was the kidnapper of his daughter.

Jonathan Ross Mata, 39, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. on December 25 after using a firearm against a fleeing SUV outside a Shell gas station in Houston, resulting in the death of 25-year-old Desmond Butler. Surveillance footage captured the incident, which has since been reported widely.

This heartbreaking situation began with a frantic phone call from Mata’s 19-year-old daughter, claiming she was assaulted by her boyfriend. Initially, she had asked for a ride from her cousin. However, after some time, Mata and his wife assumed her boyfriend would drop her off at the gas station instead.

According to a police complaint, shortly after arriving at the gas station, the couple saw a vehicle that looked like their daughter’s boyfriend’s, driven by a man with a woman in the passenger seat.

“The defendant thought his daughter was in that vehicle and his wife got out, trying to chase after it,” the complaint details.

Surveillance footage shows Butler driving into the gas station along with a woman. When Mata’s wife unexpectedly jumped out to pursue the vehicle, Butler, seemingly unaware of what was unfolding, sped off.

Shortly thereafter, the video shows Mata approaching the fleeing vehicle while armed with a pistol. He allegedly fired shots at the SUV, hitting Butler, before the latter lost control and crashed into a pole.

Once Mata and his wife understood the situation—that Butler wasn’t their daughter’s boyfriend—they examined the vehicle. Reportedly, Mata said something along the lines of, “Oh, I was looking for my kidnapped daughter, sorry, I’m going to call 911,” and then drove away.

When emergency services arrived, Mata and his wife had already left the area. Butler was rushed to a hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

The couple later presented themselves at police headquarters with an attorney, asserting that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding connected to the alleged kidnapping.

Mata explained to investigators that he fired two shots in an attempt to stop the car. Yet, he left the scene without calling for help, according to the complaint.

As of now, Mata has been charged with murder and appeared in court this past Wednesday, where he was granted a $50,000 bail. His next court date is set for February 25.

Butler’s sister expressed her family’s devastation, noting that her brother, who relocated to Houston in 2023 for a job at Amazon, had no specific plans for Christmas. “We just want to understand why this happened. My brother was such a source of joy,” she shared.
