Some Democrats are pushing for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania is urging his party to steer clear of “extreme” proposals. In a recent post on social media, he pointed out that even the Mayor of Minneapolis doesn’t support abolishing ICE and emphasized that the party should avoid tendencies that lead to such extreme positions.
Fetterman expressed, “Secure our borders, deport all criminals, and stop targeting our hardworking immigrants.” He included a screenshot of a New York Times headline discussing the slogan to abolish ICE, which has become a divisive topic.
Earlier, in July 2025, Fetterman stated that ICE plays a crucial role and deemed calls to abolish the agency as “inappropriate and outrageous.” He highlighted the need for a balanced dialogue around immigration and law enforcement. He showed his support for certain ICE actions, like targeting child sex offenders, while also acknowledging that he disagrees with some of their tactics and methods.
Meanwhile, Representative Shri Thanedar, a Democrat from Michigan, has introduced legislation aimed at abolishing ICE. The proposed bill outlines that ICE would be dismantled 90 days after its enactment. This push has opened further divisions within the Democratic Party as they navigate differing views on immigration enforcement and reform.
