Prince Harry is set to return to London next week, but it seems his family isn’t ready to roll out the welcome mat. The Duke of Sussex will be in the UK on January 19 for a court hearing related to his ongoing lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, which publishes the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. Meanwhile, Prince William and Duchess Kate will be in Scotland for a previously scheduled engagement, quite far from Harry’s location.
Interestingly, King Charles will also be in Scotland during that time, with plans to engage at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on Monday.
Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner remarked, “Surprise, surprise. The rift between the two brothers remains unresolved as it was in 2026. The battle continues.” He suggested that the royal family, particularly Prince William, likely knew about Harry’s trial date long in advance, but their engagements had already been arranged. The brothers reportedly haven’t spoken since 2020, which only deepens the divide.
Turner expressed skepticism about the potential for a meeting between Harry and King Charles during this visit. “There won’t be an official meeting,” he noted, “but there are ongoing discussions behind the scenes involving Harry and royal officials.”
Richard Fitzwilliams, another royal commentator, emphasized that Prince Harry’s relationship with Prince William is still strained, noting that the latter has not been in contact with his brother recently. “William and Catherine will obviously not meet while Harry is in court,” he stated, adding that trust within the royal family seems to be waning.
While Harry is tied up with court proceedings, William and Kate will be engaging with Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic curling teams ahead of upcoming events, and they have plans to explore Scottish tartan traditions at a workshop.
Fitzwilliams pointed out the high likelihood of press interest in Harry’s legal issues, suggesting this won’t be the last we hear of it. He remarked on the tentativeness and sensitivity of the ongoing family dynamics, full of speculation, indicating possible plans for Harry and Meghan to return in the summer for an event linked to the Invictus Games.
There’s little doubt that the royal family’s views on Harry, compounded by his legal actions and past interviews, have affected their relationship, especially after his memoir, which disclosed some deeply personal family matters. In previous discussions, Harry has openly expressed a desire for reconciliation but has also acknowledged that forgiveness is not guaranteed.
In sum, with Harry’s looming court date and his family’s concurrent commitments, the atmosphere seems charged and uncertain ahead of his visit. The dynamics continue to evolve with each encounter, yet real change remains to be seen.
