National Guard personnel stationed in Washington, D.C., are expected to remain in the city until the end of the year, according to a U.S. official. White House representatives noted that President Trump has committed to utilizing all necessary resources to ensure the safety of the capital, which might include ongoing National Guard deployments.
As of Friday, 2,429 troops are actively working in D.C. This includes 712 from the D.C. National Guard, while the rest, numbering 1,717, come from various states across the nation. A memo issued on Wednesday by Army Secretary Dan Driscoll indicated that the situation justifies an extension of their presence through the end of February, linking this to the President’s ongoing attempts to “restore law and order.”
Interestingly, in light of the current unrest, Governor Walz also approved the deployment of National Guard troops following an ice shooting incident in Minneapolis.
In an effort to enhance public safety and rejuvenate some of D.C.’s most recognized areas, the National Guard is part of a collaborative initiative dubbed D.C.’s Safe and Beautiful Mission, which started in August 2025. This program brings together various agencies aiming to provide a secure and clean environment in the capital.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, as of December 31, over 8,152 violent offenders have been apprehended by the Keep D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, with charges ranging from murder to drug offenses. Additionally, around 8,406 arrests have been recorded, alongside the seizure of 856 firearms, preventing their potential use in crimes.
The National Guard’s presence has garnered attention after two of its members were tragically killed by suspected assailants in November. One of the deceased, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom from West Virginia, succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.
