Graham urges the end of the Iranian government as Erfan Soltani awaits execution.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has advocated for the downfall of Iran’s regime amid ongoing protests in the country. He recently expressed that comments made by President Donald Trump might encourage U.S. intervention, especially as people anxiously await the fate of a 26-year-old protester facing execution.

“It’s with great sadness that I read about the pending execution of Erfan Soltani, a shopkeeper who faces death simply for protesting for a better life. His family is urgently calling for help from the world,” Graham mentioned in a post on X, sharing an article covering Soltani’s situation.

He added, “I sincerely hope the execution doesn’t take place and that this young man can live freely without fear.” Graham believes that the region would experience “incredibly positive” changes once the current regime collapses, but he warned that if Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remained in control, it would lead to a significant “retreat into darkness.”

Recently, Soltani’s situation has gained attention as unrest in Iran intensifies. Reports indicate that he was arrested in Fardis and sentenced to death after a rapid trial. According to his cousin Gala, who lives in Germany, this process is indicative of the regime’s oppressive nature.

Gala remarked, “As someone advocating for change, it’s my responsibility to ensure Erfan’s voice is heard globally, despite the immense pressure on his family.” Protests in Iran began escalating in late December due to worsening economic conditions, leading to a nationwide internet blackout to suppress communication between demonstrators and the outside world. There are growing concerns that protesters could face extreme violence or worse.

In the wake of these events, President Trump commented on January 2 that the U.S. was “well prepared” should the regime resort to violence against protestors. Following this, he hinted at potential action, as long-standing tensions with regimes like that of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro were in focus.

Recently, Trump, during a statement in the Oval Office, claimed that he had received confirmation from “legitimate authority” that killings had ceased in Iran. “We’re hearing that the killings are stopping,” he stated. However, uncertainty remains about future executions.

On Friday, Trump further implied that the regime had halted violence. He announced that more than 800 planned hangings had been canceled, attributing this to the Iranian leadership’s decision.

As for Soltani’s fate and the potential for U.S. intervention, both remain ambiguous.
