Hannity and Dem Rep. Thanedar Debate Immigration and ICE Strategies

Debate on Deportation Tactics

On FNC’s “Hannity” last Friday, Sean Hannity engaged in a contentious conversation with Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) regarding deportation policies, the strategies employed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and whether Democrats are paying adequate attention to crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and their victims.

Hannity highlighted that Thanedar is advocating for the impeachment of Trump over deportation issues and wants to eliminate ICE entirely. Additionally, he pointed out that Thanedar voted against a bill requiring the deportation of undocumented immigrants convicted of sex crimes, a proposal that gained bipartisan support in the House.

Hannity criticized Thanedar’s focus on supporting undocumented immigrants while not addressing the concerns of victims harmed by criminal illegal aliens, including those in his own state’s communities.

Shri Thanedar was invited to respond.

Hannity pressed him on whether he had stood during the president’s joint address to Congress, which honored families of victims, such as Laken Riley, a nursing student killed by an undocumented immigrant, and Jocelyn Nangarei, a 12-year-old girl who suffered a horrific fate. He pointedly asked if Thanedar had paid tribute to those families.

Thanedar began by thanking Hannity for the opportunity to speak but the host cut him off, demanding a straightforward answer about his actions during the tribute.

Thanedar replied that he did not stand because, in his view, the president was profiting from their tragedy. Hannity interjected, expressing disbelief that Thanedar could sit idly in the face of such loss. The conversation turned heated, with Hannity accusing Thanedar of failing to defend those families.

Thanedar insisted he does not support the current president, and the debate continued, with Hannity emphasizing the plight of victims of violent crimes perpetrated by illegal immigrants.

The discussion shifted to Thanedar’s voting record, with Hannity expressing disbelief that he would vote against a bill aimed at deporting illegal immigrants convicted of sex offenses. Thanedar maintained that he does believe in deportation for those breaking the law but justified his vote by claiming the bill was not perfect and involved more than just that single issue.

Hannity pressed him further, insisting that, hypothetically, if someone close to him were harmed, his stance on deportation would likely be different. Thanedar argued about the complexities of legislation but did not provide a satisfactory answer to whether he would have called a victim’s family.

After several back-and-forths concerning deportation and victim support, the debate veered onto incidents involving ICE agents. Hannity mentioned a case where an ICE officer was injured, and Thanedar attributed the injury reports to misinformation from the Department of Homeland Security, which he claimed had lied about the circumstances.

Hannity challenged Thanedar’s views, questioning why he labeled an ICE officer as a murderer when considering the broader context of the events that transpired. Thanedar insisted his comments were based on the situation as he perceived it, leading to further clashes about the responsibilities and actions of law enforcement.

Hannity accused Thanedar and similar commentators of inciting violence against ICE agents, arguing that their statements show a lack of appreciation for those who risk their lives to enforce the law. In response, Thanedar accused ICE of harming American citizens, stating that their actions are unacceptable.

The exchange concluded with Hannity expressing stark disagreement with Thanedar’s perspective and urging a different approach to the complex issues of immigration and law enforcement.

Thanedar’s remarks and voting decisions drew significant scrutiny, highlighting the tension surrounding immigration policy and public safety in the current political landscape.
