Deltopia Street Party Cancelled
This week, officials in Santa Barbara County made a unanimous decision to put an end to the Deltopia street party. They expressed concerns over local police and emergency services being overwhelmed by the large crowds that typically gather for this three-day event.
A new ordinance is set to take effect before the next scheduled Deltopia event on January 27. This law will ban unauthorized gatherings during the first weekend of the spring semester at UC Santa Barbara.
These spring celebrations in Isla Vista attract thousands of young people, often leading to significant public safety issues. Emergency services report increased strain during this time, resulting in numerous arrests and emergency situations.
During the last Deltopia, it was noted that EMS calls surged by sixty times compared to an ordinary weekend. Moreover, sheriff and fire officials estimate that the costs associated with managing these gatherings have surpassed $465,000 in overtime since the beginning of 2023.
Last year, approximately 25,000 individuals attended the event. Deltopia has an interesting history, originating about 20 years ago as “Flotopia,” a beach gathering where attendees floated on rafts and inner tubes. Since then, it has evolved into an extensive street party.
Officials acknowledge that sanctioned events can still take place if they are organized by government entities, such as the Isla Vista Community Services District. However, some students are voicing their opposition to the ban, suggesting that it may only push the festivities underground, which could increase the risks associated with such gatherings.
In an effort to promote safety, student organizations plan to distribute Narcan and offer health resources during the upcoming weekend, seeking to create a safer environment even as the official parties face a ban.
A second and final vote on this ordinance is anticipated on January 27, just before the anticipated Deltopia weekend.
