Trump Plans Lawsuit Against JPMorgan Chase
President Donald Trump has revealed his intention to take legal action against JPMorgan Chase, claiming they “debanked” him following the January 6, 2021, incident at the U.S. Capitol.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump addressed a report from the Wall Street Journal that suggested he offered the CEO of JPMorgan, Jamie Dimon, the role of Chairman of the Federal Reserve. He firmly denied the report, stating his plans for the lawsuit in the same breath.
“In fact, I’ll be suing JPMorgan Chase over the next two weeks for incorrectly and inappropriately DEBANKING me after the January 6th Protest, a protest that turned out to be correct for those doing the protesting — The Election was RIGGED!” Trump asserted.
On January 6, 2021, Congress convened to certify the results of the prior presidential election. Trump had encouraged his supporters to protest peacefully. However, as the situation escalated, some Capitol Police used tear gas and rubber bullets while others allowed protesters past barricades. Despite Trump’s calls for peacefulness—both in Tweets and a video—some narratives branded the event as a violent coup led by him. Interestingly, leaked footage showed Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi expressing accountability for not preparing National Guard troops.
Dimon has acknowledged that JPMorgan has intentionally debanked a number of clients but maintained that their actions were not based on unlawful intentions.
“We do not debank people because of religious or political affiliations,” Dimon explained. “We debank people who have various affiliations. It’s not targeted at any specific group.”
In August, Trump signed an executive order aimed at penalizing financial institutions for discriminating based on political or religious beliefs. This directive requires banks to restore services to clients they previously denied.
“The banks discriminate against conservatives, they discriminate against religion, because they’re afraid of the radical left, I suspect,” Trump remarked during the announcement. “We’re going to get them. Nobody knows the banking industry better than me, and I’m not going to let them take advantage of you any longer.”
