Media twists 'homicide' story following ICE detainee's death — but DHS clarifies the facts

Tragic Incident at El Paso Immigration Detention Facility

A detainee held in a federal immigration facility in El Paso, Texas, has reportedly died following an apparent suicide attempt. Initial accounts from the Washington Post suggest that the local medical examiner may classify the death of Gerardo Lunas Campos at the Camp East facility as a “homicide,” noting that another detainee claimed to have witnessed guards asphyxiating him.

However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) offered a contrasting narrative. They stated that Campos, described as an undocumented immigrant and a convicted child sex offender, had violently resisted staff during a suicide prevention intervention.

DHS claimed that staff intervened when Campos attempted to take his life, and during the struggle, he “stopped breathing and lost consciousness.” Medical personnel were called, but he was later pronounced dead at the facility.

ICE emphasized that they take the health and safety of detainees seriously and that they are actively investigating the incident, with more details expected to be released soon.

On another note, DHS reported that Campos had been apprehended during a planned enforcement operation in Rochester, New York, on July 14, 2025. He had entered the U.S. in 1996 and accumulated multiple convictions, including charges related to child sexual offenses and drug possession.

Additionally, an immigration judge had ordered his deportation back in 2005, but complications with obtaining the necessary travel documents prevented that from happening. He was subsequently transferred to Camp East in Montana on September 6, 2025.
