John Mellencamp’s Unique Advice to His Children

While many parents typically push their kids towards careers, John Mellencamp seems to be taking a different approach. The 74-year-old musician has decided not to urge his children to find traditional jobs; rather, he believes they should focus on what truly brings them joy.

In a recent episode of the “Joe Rogan Experience,” Mellencamp joked, “I’m probably the only dad out there who doesn’t encourage his kids to work. I mean, what’s the point?”

Mellencamp is a father to five: a daughter named Michelle, 55, from his marriage to Priscilla Esterlein, and two daughters, Teddy, 44, and Justice, 40, with ex-wife Victoria Granucci. He also has two sons, Hud, 31, and Speck, 30, with his current wife, Elaine Irwin.

Interestingly, his kids haven’t completely adopted his philosophy. He remarked, “Well, work doesn’t matter. Just do what you want to do. You’re young and capable. But I think he’s reaching an age where he feels he should start working.”

It seems Mellencamp has mixed feelings about Hud’s desire to enter the workforce, particularly since Hud lives close by, on his father’s property. “Honestly, I love having him around,” he shared.

Mellencamp revealed that his closeness to his adult children is more meaningful to him than them achieving career success or independence. “I would cherish a call from my child asking for help, just to come over,” he expressed.

Throughout the years, he has spoken openly about the importance of family, health, and the connection he maintains with his kids as he ages.

He’s also been transparent about the challenges his daughter Teddy faces as she battles cancer. In fact, he’s encouraged her to move back to Indiana for support during her treatment.

He lamented, “I tried to persuade her to return home, to take her children and be nearby, but she didn’t really reply.”

Teddy first disclosed her stage 2 melanoma diagnosis in March 2022, later revealing in April 2025 that her condition had advanced to stage IV, with cancer spreading to her brain and lungs. After surgery to remove a tumor, doctors found yet another one.
