On Sunday, President Donald Trump took to social media to criticize Minnesota Democrats, claiming they are leveraging a current federal operation to divert attention from what he described as a significant fraud issue in the state.
In a statement on his “Truth” platform, Trump highlighted that federal agents in Minneapolis and St. Paul are focused on apprehending “violent criminals.” He questioned why Minnesota is resisting efforts to remove dangerous offenders, saying, “Does the state really want to harbor murderers and drug traffickers? The ongoing protests seem to feature many well-compensated agitators and anarchists. Is that what the people of Minnesota actually want?”
He also directed his remarks toward Governor Tim Walz and Representative Ilhan Omar, suggesting, “It’s all a distraction from the over $18 billion fraud case happening right here!” He reassured, “Don’t worry, we’re addressing it!”
In light of escalating protests, the Minnesota National Guard is prepared to assist law enforcement, as some recent demonstrations have turned violent.
Federal personnel in Minnesota have reportedly encountered harassment and protests from activists in recent weeks. Federal prosecutors are looking into whether Governor Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey obstructed law enforcement operations in the state.
Deputy U.S. Attorney Todd Blanche commented that the anti-ICE remarks by the governor and mayor might amount to a federal crime. He stated, “When a governor or mayor suggests that citizens should call 911 upon seeing ICE agents, that’s very close to being a federal offense.”
Walz refuted the federal government’s justification for not complying with ICE regulations and accused the Trump administration of “weaponizing the justice system.” He pointed out that various political figures seem to be targeted, indicating, “It appears this tactic of using justice against opponents is becoming a disturbing norm.”
Mayor Frey responded to the situation on social media, asserting he will not back down. He stated, “This is a blatant attempt to intimidate me as I defend Minneapolis against the turmoil this administration has instigated. My commitment to ensuring our city’s safety remains unwavering.”
