Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Remarks on Immigration Practices
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) drew parallels between U.S. immigration actions and those of countries like Somalia, from where she emigrated. Speaking at a Democratic hearing in St. Paul, she expressed disbelief that she would encounter such treatment in the United States, a country she had hoped would be free from such issues.
“I don’t want to swear, but for those of us who fled places like that, America was the only place we thought we would never experience something like this,” Omar stated. She criticized the situation, saying, “it’s a shame that this is happening in America,” noting how people around the world are questioning whether this is truly the America they expect.
Omar, who represents much of Minneapolis, has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration, particularly its use of ICE agents in a crackdown on illegal immigration. Many believe the recent killing of Renee Good at the hands of ICE agents has highlighted aggressive tactics that aim to intimidate the public.
In response to ongoing immigration issues, Minneapolis and St. Paul have seen the deployment of around 3,000 federal workers following a major fraud scandal in the state. Although President Trump had considered invoking the Insurrection Act to restore order, he seemed to step back from that plan recently.
Omar’s comments received backlash from several conservative figures online. Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) criticized her, saying Congress members should refrain from referring to the United States in derogatory terms. He questioned the ramifications of such remarks. Billionaire Elon Musk further chimed in, suggesting that any treasonous act deserves severe punishment.

Omar pointed out that many of her Republican peers might feel uneasy knowing their constituents are facing what she termed a profession that frightens residents of Minneapolis and St. Paul. “When voters ask for assistance, we don’t inquire about their voting choices. That’s what being a representative entails,” she explained, suggesting that the current political climate is unsettling for those in power.
“It’s appalling that our Republican colleagues are so comfortable with the solitary confinement of American citizens in ICE,” she added, expressing her concern about check points in cities and the expectation for residents to carry identification at all times.
