Islanders’ Tsyplakov Gets Another Shot
Vancouver, British Columbia — Patrick Roy observed a different version of Max Tsyplakov while reviewing his KHL highlights. The player showcased a blend of power and skill that seems absent in his current fight for a place in the Islanders’ roster.
“He was dynamic—bringing the puck to the net and excelling defensively,” Roy noted after the Islanders’ practice on Sunday. “It’s ingrained in him, and I want him to play his natural game.”
Tsyplakov will have another opportunity to prove himself against the Canucks on Monday night, returning to the Islanders lineup following an exit prompted by Max Shabanov. He’s set to play on the second line with teammates Cal Richie and Emil Heineman, which could ideally allow him to showcase his true talents.
“They’re really fast players,” Tsyplakov shared with the Post, emphasizing the need to commit hard work in the offensive zone. “I just need to help break through in the defensive zone.”
Roy has been tactful regarding Shabanov’s recent performances, which haven’t been stellar—he hasn’t found the net in five games and has only one goal to show for his last 26 outings.
“I thought he played well in the last game,” Roy mentioned. “Sometimes you have to switch things up.”
Tsyplakov’s season hasn’t gained much momentum; since December 9th, he’s participated in only four games.
“It’s challenging,” Tsyplakov admitted. “You just have to stay positive, work hard in practice, and seize every opportunity you get.”
In other news, Phil Goyette, a four-time Stanley Cup winner with the Canadiens and the Islanders’ inaugural head coach, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92, according to a statement from the Canadiens.
During his career, Goyette played seven seasons with the Rangers, notably as part of the 1972 team that fell to the Bruins in the Cup Final. His coaching tenure with the newly formed Islanders saw him end with a disappointing 6-40-4 record before Earl Ingerfield took over the coaching duties.
While the Canadiens did not disclose the cause of death, they expressed gratitude for the public’s sympathies on behalf of Goyette’s family.
Ilya Sorokin will be in goal for the Islanders as they face the Canucks on Monday.
