The Price of a Full-Size Pickup Truck Has Become Excessive

Americans’ Love for Pickup Trucks

There’s something about pickup trucks that really resonates with Americans. They aren’t just vehicles; they’re a part of people’s lives.

Pickups are versatile and enjoyable to drive. Whether for work, home projects, or family trips, they serve many purposes. And let’s be honest, if your kid is having a meltdown, the back seat works just fine. More than that, they embody core American values like toughness, adventure, and practicality.

But here’s the catch: prices for pickups have skyrocketed in recent years. They’ve gotten so pricey that it’s hard to believe anyone can actually avoid falling into debt after buying one.

In December 2025, over 233,000 full-size pickups were sold—the best sales month for trucks in five years and the sixth best in the last decade, according to a recent Kelley Blue Book report.

However, the average full-size pickup truck price hit a whopping $66,386 in December, just shy of the record set in October. In total, Americans splurged more than $15 billion on retail and fleet sales of these trucks.

Can the average middle-class American really afford this without dipping into savings or taking on debt?

I might be off base here, but if you ask most folks what they want in a truck, I think reliability, a decent cargo bed, and a straightforward design would top the list. Who needs a dashboard that feels like a mini-computer? Not everyone is looking for all the extra tech clutter. Personally, I would opt for a retro design that includes leather and analog features over plastic and flashy touches.

All this new tech does increase manufacturing costs, and sure, maybe some people want all those gadgets. Heavy-duty trucks are designed for maximum towing power and off-road capabilities—the latter of which, I suspect, many won’t even use—but they do look sharp. Maybe I just don’t get it. Perhaps people genuinely love these pricey trucks because they serve as status symbols. In some ways, they’re no different from luxury cars.

Now, the Ford Maverick is an option for those seeking a more affordable small truck. You can get a basic model for a reasonable price. Still, even that one clocks in at nearly $30,000 new, and the small bed isn’t really practical for work.

Recently, President Donald Trump made a significant move to roll back fuel regulations that have made light trucks more expensive to manufacture. But we need to do more. We really need a solid, affordable full-size pickup that won’t leave you in a financial bind.

Cars always hold value in terms of status. Some are just plain amazing, and driving them is a joy. But everyone should have the chance to buy a full-size pickup without breaking the bank. They should be able to opt for upgrades without being forced to pay for unnecessary features. Trucks are integral to our American way of life, and you shouldn’t have to shell out a fortune to embrace that tradition.

If you own a truck, I’d love to hear your thoughts on rising costs and whether automakers should consider bringing back smaller, more budget-friendly options. You can reach me at jloftus@dailycaller.com.
