John Mellencamp Supports Indiana Hoosiers Ahead of Championship Game

Rock icon and devoted Indiana football fan, John Mellencamp, showed his support for the Hoosiers as they prepared for their national championship game against the Miami Hurricanes. The 74-year-old musician, clad in cream and crimson—including an IU Letterman jacket—shared a photo just hours before the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship Game, set to take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

In the snapshot, Mellencamp stood on a snowy street in his letterman jacket, black pants, dark glasses, and white sneakers. Known for his philanthropic ties to the Hoosiers, he cheered them on with enthusiasm on social media saying, “Let’s go Hoosiers! #Hoosiers #Football #Championship #Miami.”

This season has marked an incredible turnaround for the team that, historically, was often considered one of the weaker contenders in the Big Ten. Yet, the Hoosiers are currently undefeated, boasting a remarkable 15-0 record, which includes standout playoff victories over teams like Alabama and Oregon. They’ll take on Miami led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Indiana’s first-ever Heisman Trophy winner.

Mellencamp’s dedication to the team spans decades. Growing up in Bloomington, where Indiana University’s main campus is located, he attended games with his brother when he was younger. Even after achieving fame in the 1980s, he remained a loyal supporter. In fact, he donated $1.5 million for the construction of the John Mellencamp Pavilion, the indoor training facility for the football team, highlighting his continuous commitment.

Interestingly, years before this championship run, Mellencamp shared his frustrations with the team’s struggles. He reflected on the dark times when support was hard to come by, stating, “I was depressed for years.” Yet, Mellencamp persisted in attending games, often while enjoying a smoke in the relatively empty stadium—a habit he found convenient during quieter matches.

Recently, a wooden hut was built at the top of Hoosiers Memorial Stadium for Mellencamp, allowing him to watch games while enjoying his solitude. He remarked, “I based myself there and no one bothered me, and I can smoke.” However, only a select few will be able to join him during games, according to IU President Pam Whitten, due to limited space in the cabin.

Mellencamp has watched the Hoosiers evolve into championship contenders, thanks in part to the hiring of coach Curt Cignetti in 2024. He appeared on CBS’s “60 Minutes” to discuss the team’s historic season, highlighting Cignetti’s calm demeanor during games—something Mellencamp admires greatly.

Despite his unwavering support, Mellencamp won’t be in the stands for the championship game, as he prepares for his upcoming summer tour, “The Greatest Hits.” However, if the Hoosiers emerge victorious, there’s a good chance he’ll adjust his schedule to attend the victory parade.
