Trump Plans Signing Ceremony for Gaza Peace Commission in Davos
Plans are underway, at the behest of President Donald Trump, to hold a signing ceremony for a Gaza peace commission in Davos, Switzerland. This was confirmed on Tuesday, following an initial report from Bloomberg.
Over the weekend, the Trump administration began inviting various countries to join as founding members of this peace commission. However, it’s unclear how many will attend the World Economic Forum or eventually sign on to the agreement.
Trump has extended invitations to leaders from countries including Russia, Belarus, China, Ukraine, and India, among others. Some of these nations have voiced reservations about the proposed Gaza Peace Commission, particularly regarding the substantial financial commitments required for participation.
European allies are currently working together to formulate a joint response to the plan, which reportedly includes soliciting assistance from Arab nations to adjust the substantial $1 billion fee attached to the permanent council.
When asked about French President Emmanuel Macron’s hesitance to accept the invitation, Trump made a remark about Macron’s impending departure from office, suggesting that he could choose not to participate if he wished. According to Trump, if Macron felt antagonistic, he would escalate trade tensions with tariffs.
On a related note, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly questioned the proposal. He expressed concern after the announcement that Turkish and Qatari officials were appointed to a separate Gaza Executive Committee without coordination with Israel, stating this goes against Israeli policy.
The White House further revealed that President Trump will lead the Peace Council, accompanied by a group of senior political, diplomatic, and business figures, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
