John Harbaugh shares whether he considered taking a coaching break before the Giants' hiring.

John Harbaugh’s Coaching Transition

John Harbaugh didn’t foresee taking a break from coaching when his 18-year run with the Ravens ended unexpectedly this month.

He said he “didn’t have enough time” to contemplate the idea, as he was about to step into his new role as coach of the New York Giants.

“Honestly, I felt I was too busy to take a break. I couldn’t wait to dive right back into work. It wasn’t an issue at all. My wife, Ingrid, and I discussed it, and she was on board too. We were excited; this opportunity felt right from the start,” Harbaugh shared during his introductory press conference, just days after his five-year contract became official.

It’s been a hectic couple of weeks for him.

Only two days after the Ravens finished their season with a loss to the Steelers, Harbaugh was let go. Suddenly, he became one of the most sought-after coaches, particularly after Mike Tomlin stepped away from coaching.

Quickly, the Giants sprang into action, with executives visiting Harbaugh’s home in Maryland and taking him for a tour of their facilities last Wednesday.

He wrapped up that visit with dinner alongside general manager Joe Schoen at a nearby Mediterranean restaurant. It was his first experience with an NFL club, though he has been following the Titans and Falcons, too. Later that same night, news emerged hinting at a likely collaboration with the Giants.

As fans awaited official word on the deal, rumors surfaced on Friday suggesting there might be hiccups between Harbaugh and the team, as the agreement hadn’t been formally confirmed.

However, relief swept through Giants supporters on Saturday when the $100 million deal was officially announced.

In an unusual twist, Harbaugh will report directly to co-owner John Mara, which deviates from the franchise’s norm of having the general manager mediate.

“John Mara was a significant draw for me to come here,” Harbaugh stated. He recounted seeing Mara in various contexts throughout his years in the NFL, emphasizing the importance of their conversations during the hiring process.

Harbaugh sees the Giants as a promising team and is already envisioning playoff possibilities for 2025, despite their recent 4-13 record.

“I’m impressed with their core group of players. They’re young, passionate about the game, and eager to put in the work,” he noted about the roster.

And so, the journey begins.
