Mayor Dodges Criticism Over Aide’s Controversial Comments

On Tuesday, Mayor Zoran Mamdani found himself in a tricky spot during a live broadcast on ABC’s “The View.” He sidestepped a direct question regarding disparaging remarks made by two of his aides about liberal white women and their views on homeownership.

Co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin pressed him about now-deleted posts from Chief Equity Officer Afua Atta-Mensah, who had previously declared, “there is no moderate way to black liberation,” and Tenant Protection Officer Sea Weaver, who had called for the “seizure of private property.”

Griffin pointed out that comments from these officials suggested homeownership was a tool of white supremacy and urged the election of more communists. “What message do you think this sends to New Yorkers? And how would you counter this?” she asked straightforwardly.

Rather than addressing her inquiry directly, Mamdani shifted the focus back to himself. “If you want to know my views and opinions, you will find them in my words,” he stated. He also emphasized his desire to create a city that everyone could afford.

While he went on to commend Weaver’s work, he notably refrained from mentioning her name or engaging with the specific questions posed. “Really, what New Yorkers want is results. What I care about is the results and the excellence that we deliver,” he said.

Mamdani claimed that in the short time since Weaver’s appointment, the city had taken significant action against a landlord with numerous violations, securing $30 million in repairs for affected tenants.

In a somewhat meandering response, Mamdani also sought to reassure homeowners, noting that his vision for an affordable city encompasses both tenants and homeowners, as well as those aspiring to own their homes. He concluded with a personal touch, mentioning his support for abolishing ICE, further complicating the narrative of his administration’s focus.
