Brawl at Youth Baseball Game in Florida
A youth baseball game turned chaotic in Florida on Saturday as a fight broke out, reportedly initiated by a father reacting to a contentious umpire decision. The incident occurred at the Chain of the Lakes Park baseball complex in Winter Haven, around 6 p.m., during a youth tournament.
Authorities reported that Yosmany Guzmán Fernández, 38, confronted the umpire’s father after a warning had been issued to his son’s team coach, Marcos Antonio Abarri, 25. Witnesses shared shocking video footage that appeared to show Fernández striking the umpire’s father, which quickly escalated into a larger brawl involving players and spectators.
Footage depicted the two men tussling on the concrete, with other players and onlookers joining the fray. At one point, someone attempted to separate them by pulling at a shirt, but chaos continued until a larger individual intervened.
The 21-year-old umpire joined the scuffle to assist his father, becoming entangled in the melee. Meanwhile, Abali and Fernández’s 17-year-old son also joined the fight, reportedly landing blows on both the umpire and his father. Despite witnesses trying to pull him away, the boy returned to the conflict shortly after.
Additionally, police noted that another bystander attempted to step in to protect the referee but ended up getting beaten by the crowd. Authorities alluded to a prior history of tension between Fernández and the umpire’s father.
“There’s no room for parents to spoil what should be a showcase of young talent at these tournaments,” said Police Chief Vance Monroe, emphasizing that the focus should remain on the players, not on disruptive behavior from adults.
Fernández, Abarri, and their son were arrested and now face charges of assaulting sports officials during the event, classified as a third-degree felony with potential prison time of up to five years. Fernández also received an additional simple battery charge, according to a news release.
In a similar incident, a flag football tournament in Arizona experienced a melee as players from two teams engaged in a physical altercation, with parents spectating and cheering on their children, ultimately swelling the crowd involved to around 100 people.
