Protests Erupt Across U.S. on Trump Administration’s Anniversary

On Tuesday, a significant number of individuals gathered in cities nationwide to commemorate one year since Donald Trump began his second term as president, participating in large-scale protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The demonstration, called the “Free America Walkout,” was organized by the Women’s March, which previously mobilized millions to voice their opposition to the Trump administration back in 2017.

Participants were encouraged to leave their schools, workplaces, and businesses around 2 p.m. local time as part of a unified effort to “withhold labor, participation, and consent” related to the “Free America” movement, as noted on the group’s website.

Footage captured in major metropolitan areas, including Atlanta, New York City, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C., displayed crowds rallying together in coordinated efforts.

Interestingly, in various regions, even high school students braved the snow to express their political stance, even if they weren’t eligible to vote yet. In certain places, school principals alerted parents and prepared for protest supervision, according to local news reports.

Most protests unfolded peacefully, with demonstrators filling public spaces. In New York City, for instance, crowds marched near Trump Tower, chanting slogans and displaying signs advocating for federal policy changes.

Critics of the Trump administration labeled it as “fascist,” particularly following the president’s directive to deploy thousands of ICE agents and federal troops to major cities, intensifying efforts against illegal immigration.

The group articulated their concerns: “One year into the second Trump administration, we face an escalating fascist threat: ICE attacks on our communities, military occupation of our cities, separating families, attacks on our transgender brothers, mass surveillance, and terrorism to silence us. It’s time for our community to escalate as well.”

Protest leaders emphasized that conducting strikes on weekdays would be more effective by interrupting everyday activities in schools, workplaces, and community life. Their message conveyed the importance of labor, stating, “The strike disrupts normal business operations. It highlights how much our labor, participation, and cooperation are taken for granted and what happens when we withdraw them altogether.”

The protests also came in response to a tragic incident in Minneapolis, where ICE agents fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode after she obstructed an operation with her vehicle. This incident has brought renewed attention to the administration’s aggressive tactics.
