Brawl at Youth Baseball Game in Florida

A chaotic scene unfolded at a youth baseball tournament in Winter Haven, Florida, when a fight broke out after a disagreement over a controversial call. This incident occurred around 6 p.m. at the Chain of the Lakes Park baseball complex, according to local authorities.

The altercation, described as a “bench removal brawl,” escalated quickly. Yosmany Guzmán Fernández, aged 38, allegedly confronted the umpire’s father, protesting a warning issued to his son’s coach, Marcos Antonio Abarri, who is 25. Witnesses have reported that Fernández struck the umpire’s father in the face, which triggered a melee involving players and spectators rushing to the scene.

Videos captured by onlookers depicted the two men grappling on the ground, while others in uniform joined the fray. Attempts by some individuals to break up the fight were ineffective until a larger person managed to step in and calm the situation.

As the ordeal unfolded, the 21-year-old umpire also jumped in to assist his father but became entangled in the conflict. Notably, the 17-year-old son of Fernández joined in, reportedly hitting both the umpire and his father. Despite interventions from witnesses trying to pull him away, he managed to rejoin the altercation almost immediately.

A witness who attempted to shield the referee from the chaos was also targeted by the crowd, illustrating the extent of the disorder.

Authorities hinted that there was a history of conflict between Fernández and the umpire’s father, which may have contributed to the volatility of the situation. Police Chief Vance Monroe remarked on the unsportsmanlike behavior, emphasizing that such disturbances overshadow the talent showcased during the tournaments.

Subsequently, Fernández, Abarri, and Fernández’s son were arrested and face charges of assaulting sports personnel, which is classified as a third-degree felony that could lead to up to five years in prison. Fernández also received a charge for simple battery, as highlighted in an official news release.

In a related incident thousands of miles away, tensions flared at a flag football tournament in Arizona, where players from two opposing teams began throwing punches, drawing the attention of hundreds of parents who joined the fray.
