Coco Gauff’s Insights at the Australian Open

During a recent press conference at the Australian Open, American tennis player Coco Gauff shared her thoughts on the state of the United States, reflecting on President Donald Trump’s term in office. Gauff, known for her candid views on political matters, expressed a desire for a more peaceful future.

“I hope that our country will be more peaceful and that there will be more kindness as we talk to each other about different topics and things like that,” she remarked. She added, “Obviously, I’ve been quite vocal about how I feel. I’m a little tired of talking about this at the moment, just because of being a Black woman in this country, having to go through different experiences even online, and the fact that it’s hard to see marginalized communities being affected. And I know all I can do is donate and speak out, and I’m doing my best to do that.”

She continued, noting a hope for progress: “But, yeah, as time goes on, I hope that we get to a point where we’re not where we are right now and keep moving forward. I posted a video of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and it was like saying, ‘We’ve got to keep moving forward,’ even though things aren’t as calm right now as I would like them to be.”

Gauff hasn’t shied away from discussing Trump in the past. After he won the French Open last June, she described the political climate leading into the 2024 presidential election as a “low period.”

The athlete reminisced about how she felt after past elections, mentioning, “I remember feeling a little depressed after the elections and everything else was over. My mom told me in Riyadh to try to win tournaments to put smiles on people’s faces. That’s what I was thinking about today.”

Despite her comments on the tough times, Gauff affirmed her pride in her country. “Some people may feel uncomfortable about being patriotic or something, but I’m definitely patriotic. I’m proud to be an American. I’m proud to represent Americans who look like me and people who support what I stand for,” she stated.

So far in the Australian Open, Gauff has achieved victories over Kamila Rakimova and Olga Danilovich, advancing to the third round where she will face fellow American Haley Baptiste.
