Trump Addresses European Leaders on Greenland at WEF
During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Donald Trump assured European leaders that he would not deploy troops to take Greenland from Denmark.
This morning, he addressed about 3,000 attendees, comprising influential figures from both the business sector and government, at the annual WEF summit.
“Only the United States can protect this huge piece of land, this huge piece of ice, and develop it,” Trump stated, adding that Greenland’s development would benefit Europe and the U.S. “That’s why I’m calling for immediate negotiations to renegotiate the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, just as we have acquired many other territories throughout our history.”
Trump elaborated on the historical relationship between the U.S. and Greenland, suggesting it would have been unwise to return the territory to Denmark post-World War II. He considers it a vital security interest for the U.S.
He warned that any conflict involving the U.S. against powers like China or Russia would likely impact Greenland significantly. “What I’m looking for is ice that’s cold and in a bad location that can play an important role in world peace,” Trump mentioned.
He further stated, “That’s a very small demand compared to what we’ve been giving them for decades,” referring to his claim that the U.S. has shouldered all NATO expenses.
Trump expressed feelings of being treated “unfairly” by NATO since its inception in 1949, mentioning the minimal demands made by the U.S.
“We have never asked for anything and we have gotten nothing. We probably won’t get anything unless we decide to use excessive strength and force,” he speculated. “But I won’t do that,” he added.
He emphasized that he does not wish to resort to force, asserting, “People expected me to use force. I don’t need to use force. I won’t use force.”
He insisted on needing “rights and ownership” to safeguard Greenland, stating that “lease agreements cannot protect Greenland.” Additionally, Trump claimed that Greenland poses a financial burden on Denmark, costing the country hundreds of millions annually.
Aside from discussions on Greenland, Trump took the opportunity to highlight his economic achievements, remarking that “Most countries wouldn’t even function without us.” He expressed hope that European nations present at the forum would learn from his leadership.
