Newsom and White House Clash Over Davos Event
The White House has dismissed California Governor Gavin Newsom, referring to him as a “nobody frolicking around Switzerland.” This comment comes after claims that the Trump administration blocked him from participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Newsom’s press team stated that both the White House and the State Department had refused his entry to a “fireside chat” organized by Fortune magazine, an event where other Democrats were set to speak.
According to Newsom’s office, following pressure from the Trump administration, USA House, which serves as the U.S. pavilion, denied him access. Newsom was expected to address the media, having been invited by Fortune for this purpose.
The White House countered Newsom’s assertions. Trump’s press secretary declared that the governor was not a priority, and White House press secretary Anna Kelly remarked that “no one in Davos knows who Newsom is or why he’s prancing around Switzerland instead of addressing California’s issues.”
A representative from the Newsom administration explained that the governor accepted the invitation to speak at the “fireside chat” on January 13, only to have US House officials cancel it days later, citing a scheduling conflict. Several members of the Trump administration had already spoken at the event.
Instead of the chat, USA House proposed a “nightcap reception” for Newsom later that evening. The Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, had also been scheduled to give a speech regarding his key policies but ultimately did not proceed.
Newsom responded on social media, questioning how “weak and pathetic” one must be to fear the simple act of a fireside chat. As a prominent figure speculated to be eyeing the 2028 presidential race, he hasn’t hesitated to challenge Trump, recently labeling him a “tyrannosaurus” and accusing him of intimidation towards European leaders.
