Buss family issues won't impact LeBron James' performance on the court

LeBron James and Lakers Drama

LeBron James finds himself yet again in the midst of Lakers-related turmoil, though it’s not really his doing.

Historically speaking, the surrounding buzz seems unlikely to affect his performance as the team gears up for the season’s second half.

A recent ESPN article delved into the notorious Buss family drama, discussing the dynamics leading up to the sale of majority ownership of the team to Mark Walter. It also shed light on Jeannie Buss, the former controlling owner and current governor, and her feelings about James behind the scenes.

When James joined the Lakers in the summer of 2018, he wasn’t exactly thrilled about being viewed as the “savior” of the franchise. After all, it often overshadowed praise for the team’s leadership in landing him.

There’s also this sentiment that he may not appreciate the blame directed at him regarding the rocky Russell Westbrook trade in 2021. Or perhaps it’s tied to feelings about the team selecting his son, Bronny, in the second round of the 2024 draft?

According to ESPN, Jeannie Buss’ feelings toward James became strained to the point where she secretly entertained the idea of not extending his contract in 2022, although they eventually did extend it. There was even speculation about trading him that year prior to his contract extension, although James secured a no-trade clause when he re-signed for the summer of 2024.

Buss described claims that James’ contributions weren’t acknowledged as “completely untrue and unfair to him,” as reported by The Athletic.

No matter what happened in the recent game against the Lakers, James won’t be seen in the media until Thursday night when facing the Clippers. But, really, there’s no need for worry about how this might impact him moving forward.

Throughout his impressive 23-season NBA career, James has demonstrated a remarkable ability to tune out distractions. He hasn’t let external noise interfere with his performance or decisions.

Consider his much-debated 2010 move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. Sure, it sparked controversy. But it ultimately resulted in two championships and four Finals appearances. Or take his return to the Cavs four years later, after a bitter fallout with owner Dan Gilbert. That decision led to the franchise’s only championship title and four Finals appearances.

Even in smaller, game-related moments, like when he opted to assist Rui Hachimura for a game-winning three-pointer against the Toronto Raptors instead of chasing a personal scoring streak, he shows his commitment to the team.

During his eight seasons with the Lakers, he has remained consistent on the court, undeterred by various distractions, such as coaching decisions and trade rumors. His production has been steady, and he’s been actively adjusting his strategy as necessary.

At 41, James is acutely aware of his basketball limitations; he knows opportunities for competing for an NBA championship are declining. He demonstrates his care for the team not just through words but through his rising performance and recent victories.

And all of this remains unaltered, regardless of the ongoing turmoil within the Buss family.

Earlier this month, James expressed his respect for the game, saying, “I understand that’s the reality. When I play this game, I’m never going to disrespect the Basketball Gods. That’s why I’ve devoted so much time and effort to this game. Every time I step on the floor, I try to set an example for my teammates and the younger generations watching.”

“I can’t afford to cheat in a game because my son is right there, and I would never do anything like that. I have to set an example for him,” he added.
