Trump selects Secretary of State Marco Rubio to spearhead the Miami World Expo 2035 initiatives

U.S. Bids for 2035 World Expo

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has a new title, thanks to a recent announcement from President Donald Trump. In a post on social media, Trump revealed that the U.S. intends to bid for the 2035 World Expo.

“The great state of Florida is keen on hosting the Expo in Miami, and I’ve got full backing on this,” Trump stated on Truth Social. He mentioned that “Expo Miami 2035 could mark a significant achievement in America’s next golden age.” On January 22, he appointed Rubio to lead the coordination efforts for this opportunity.

In his post, Trump noted, “I am appointing Secretary of State Marco Rubio from Miami. I commend the efforts to coordinate and promote this exciting chance to bring the world together.”

A World’s Fair, or International Registered Exhibition, gathers countries to address pressing challenges, as outlined by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). The event promises “engaging and immersive activities” under a universal theme, highlighting its importance.

Trump emphasized that this opportunity would enhance job creation and boost the economy. He recalled fighting hard to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, suggesting this could be another high-profile event for the U.S. “It can also host the U.S. 250, G20 Doral, and G7,” he added.

The last Expo took place in Osaka/Kansai, Japan, in 2025, attracting over 29 million visitors during its run from April 13 to October 13, according to BIE data.

The theme of the 2025 event was “Designing a Future Society for Life,” creating a space for dialogue around the topic. The upcoming World Expo in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is set for 2030, themed “Seeing Tomorrow.” This Expo aims to be a collaborative effort focusing on innovative technology, sustainable solutions, and economic prosperity.

Interestingly, Egypt has also shown a strong interest in hosting the 2035 World Expo, citing its new administrative capital and ongoing growth. South Korea, after losing the 2030 bid, has considered entering the race for 2035 as well.

In recent comments, Busan Mayor Park Hong-jun expressed hope for the city to explore hosting the World Expo, emphasizing the need for discussions with the government and residents. He stated that Busan remains committed to pursuing opportunities for a better future.

As of now, the U.S. government has not commented further on the bid, despite inquiries made by various media outlets.
