LeBron James Addresses Ownership Dynamics Following ESPN Article

Recently, an article from ESPN explored the internal conflicts within the Buss family that contributed to last summer’s sale of majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter. The piece included insights from LeBron James, who reflected on the tension reportedly felt by franchise governor Jeanie Buss toward him.

After the Lakers’ defeat against the Clippers on Thursday night, James responded to various questions in the visitors’ locker room at the Intuit Dome, including inquiries about his sense of support from team ownership in recent years.

“Honestly, I don’t really get into that situation or the media coverage around it,” James mentioned. “For sure, I’ve seen a lot of it, but I don’t have much insight. To tell the truth, I’m not really concerned about the media. You all know me well enough—I’ve been here eight years, and I’ve been in this league for 23. Tomorrow there will probably be another article completely focusing on me.”

James emphasized his aim to bring excellence back to the Lakers, recalling his admiration for the team’s history. “When I came here, my goal was to restore what made the Lakers great. Even though I didn’t witness the Showtime era, I understand its significance. Watching stars like Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant during their prime had a huge impact on me. Winning the championship in 2020 felt like a step toward that legacy.”

ESPN noted that, prior to the sale, Bass, the former controlling owner, privately expressed concerns regarding James’s strong presence and the control exerted by his agency, Klutch Sports. Bass also believed that James needed to take more responsibility for the unsuccessful Russell Westbrook trade.

Furthermore, reports indicated that Bass was not pleased with James being portrayed as a “savior” and had been contemplating on whether to extend his contract in 2022. Ultimately, James signed a two-year extension worth $97.1 million in August 2022 and later a further extension of $104 million in July 2024, albeit under pressures.

Reiterating his indifference to media narratives, James stated, “At the end of the day, I’m really not interested in what’s being written. I have other things to focus on, like my personal interests. I’m 41 years old, and I dedicate my time to what matters to me.” He emphasized that the opinions of others don’t define him, reinforcing the idea that personal connections outweigh public perception.

Rich Paul, James’s agent, dismissed the report’s implications, while coach JJ Redick praised James for his dedication and class during his time with the Lakers, stating that everyone within the organization highly values what he brings to the team.

James mentioned that his relationship with Bass was generally positive, although he acknowledged differing perspectives. “There are always two sides to a story,” he reflected. “From my time with the franchise, I’ve brought respect, honor, and loyalty. I’ve been here longer than any team outside of Cleveland.”
