Trump and Newsom Exchange Barbs at World Economic Forum

In a recent encounter at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom were reported to have exchanged some playful jabs. This moment was highlighted by 2WAY Editor-in-Chief Mark Halperin, who spoke with sources from both sides about their interaction, suggesting that the two “genuinely like each other.”

Backstage on Wednesday, just prior to Trump’s speech, he briefly commended Newsom, referring to him as a “good person.” Several key aides, including Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, were present during this amiable exchange.

Halperin noted that amidst the light-hearted teasing, it was evident that Newsom was being both playful and cheerful. Interestingly, one aide, Stephen Miller, didn’t seem quite as engaged in the banter.

A spokesperson for Newsom stated that the governor humorously claimed to reside “rent-free” in Trump’s mind. Halperin reinforced the notion that there seems to be a mutual fondness between the two figures, even if they often find themselves on opposing sides of the political spectrum.

However, just a day after their friendly interaction, Trump made a statement disparaging Newsom, referring to him as a “lame duck” governor leading a “failed state.” In his remarks, Trump criticized Democrats for allegedly causing embarrassment on the global stage. He specifically pointed to the issue of rebuilding homes lost to wildfires in California, emphasizing the need for better management of resources.

Recent data indicated that a mere 13% of homeowners have begun to rebuild after wildfires decimated a significant number of homes in the Pacific Palisades area. Trump took a jab at Newsom, stating that he should focus on solving California’s pressing issues, like a troubled high-speed rail project that has faced delays for years.

In a broader context, Trump reflected on Newsom’s potential presidential aspirations, questioning his viability due to his management of California’s challenges. Meanwhile, Newsom’s prior comments at a summit in Europe, where he accused world leaders of bowing to Trump, sparked significant online discussion.

In this political landscape, even as the two leaders exchange pleasantries, it’s clear that the relationship is complex, characterized by both camaraderie and competition.
