Sen. Ted Cruz Heads to Florida as Winter Storm Approaches D.C.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas boarded a flight to Florida on Tuesday, just before a major snowstorm was set to impact Washington, D.C.
In the capital, residents are busy stocking up on groceries, with store aisles being cleared out this weekend in anticipation of the severe winter weather. Interestingly, Cruz’s trip appears reminiscent of another controversial flight he took in 2021 during a significant winter storm that left many Texans without power.
One meteorologist humorously noted that Cruz’s travel plans might as well be used as a weather forecasting tool: “When Cruz is on a plane, expect bad weather.” It hints at a running joke, perhaps, among meteorologists.
Despite the Senate being out of session, Cruz’s spokesperson stated the trip was scheduled weeks ago and that he intends to return to Texas before the storm hits.
Winter Preparations in D.C. and Beyond
Locals are diligently preparing for the impending weather, reminiscent of the toilet paper rush during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social media shows images of long checkout lines and empty shelves under the trending hashtag ‘snowmageddon,’ as people buy essentials and winter supplies, including shovels and sleds.
Authorities have declared states of emergency in numerous regions, with warnings of ice and negative temperatures affecting much of the Northeast and Southern Plains. Southern states like Texas are particularly vulnerable to extreme cold, raising concerns about prolonged power outages.
Public Safety Recommendations
As a precaution, it’s advised to stockpile essentials like batteries, food, and warm clothing. It’s also crucial to ensure your carbon monoxide detectors are functioning and to never operate a gas generator indoors.
In a reminder of previous storms, a resident from North Carolina, Matt Van Swole, emphasized the importance of early preparation, sharing his regrets about being caught off guard by Hurricane Helen and urging others not to make the same mistake.
