Vice President J.D. Vance Critiques Far-Left Views on Marriage and Family

On Friday, Vice President J.D. Vance addressed the 53rd March for Life, criticizing the far-left stance on marriage and family. He recently welcomed his fourth child with his wife, Usha Vance, and spoke at this significant event in Washington, D.C., the largest annual human rights demonstration in the world, marking his second consecutive year of participation.

“My friends, let me be clear: We cannot be neutral. Our country cannot be indifferent to whether the next generation lives or dies. Because think about it: What ultimately gives meaning and life to the United States of America? This is not a new question. Every civilization needs an answer. You’re marching today – we’re marching today because you have the answer to this question of what kind of civilization we are and what kind of civilization we will be,” he stated, addressing the gathered participants on the National Mall.

He noted, “We must remember that in the ancient pagan world, it was common to abandon children. The hallmark of barbarism is that we treat babies like inconveniences to be thrown away, rather than blessings to cherish.” Vance emphasized that the essence of our civilization is rooted in the belief that every life is created with purpose and value.

Vance argued that the fight for unborn rights transcends politics, stating, “it’s about whether we maintain civilization under God or whether we ultimately return to the paganism that dominated our past.”

He expressed concern over the far-left narrative that discourages young people from pursuing marriage and having children. “They tell us that life itself is a burden. But those of us in this march know that’s a lie. We know that life is a gift,” he said, acknowledging how children positively impact families and communities.

Moreover, he warned that the left promotes the idea that abandoning family and children is a form of liberation: “I know those people are lying.” He articulated a vision of meaning found not in isolated settings, but rather in nurturing life and family.

Reflecting on the origins of the March for Life, Vance noted its inception in 1974, following the Supreme Court’s decision in 1973 that established a constitutional right to abortion. The ruling was overturned in June 2022, returning the issue of abortion to individual states and their elected officials.
