Joe Douglas speaks with Falcons about GM position two years after being let go by the Jets

A well-known figure in Jets history might be on his way to a new position soon.

Joe Douglas, the former general manager of the Jets, has finished interviewing for the open general manager role with the Falcons, as announced by the team on Friday.

At 49, Douglas had been the Jets’ GM since 2019, until he was let go during the disappointing 2024 season, which many fans remember as one of the toughest in recent memory.

After his departure from the Jets, he joined the Eagles as a senior scout for the 2025 season, looking to contribute in a different capacity.

His interview with the Falcons follows their recent appointment of former quarterback Matt Ryan as president of football operations. Ryan is spearheading the effort to find a successor to former GM Terry Fontenot.

“We’re looking for individuals who will collaborate effectively,” Ryan mentioned during his first press conference about the general manager search. “It’s not about being best buddies. It’s important to have a professional, strong working relationship. Sometimes, that can mean having differing viewpoints. But the most effective individuals know how to find common ground.”

“We’re conducting concurrent searches for a head coach and GM. So, we expect to find two people who not only excel in their roles but can also foster a solid working relationship,” he added.

Earlier this month, the Falcons made a significant move by hiring former Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, who has signed a five-year contract.

“I’m really excited to take on the leadership of this iconic series,” Stefanski expressed, according to the Falcons’ official website. “I want to thank Mr. Blank and Matt Ryan for their trust in me to coach this team. There’s a wealth of talent on our roster, and I can’t wait to get started.”

He further stated, “We share a vision for this football team that we believe will make Falcons fans proud everywhere. We will work quickly to assemble a top-notch coaching staff and connect with all the incredible people crucial for reaching our goals.”
