Treasury Intensifies Sanctions on Iran, Focuses on Illegal ‘Shadow Fleet’ as Government Pursues ‘Economic Self-Destruction’

New Sanctions Target Iranian Oil amid Regional Turmoil

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed on Friday that the Iranian government is engaging in what he termed “economic self-immolation.” This statement came after the Trump administration introduced fresh sanctions aimed at a “shadow fleet” involved in Iranian oil exports, coinciding with increased efforts to quell protests and heightened pressure from the U.S. around the region.

In a post on X, Bessent linked directly to a statement from the Treasury Department which pointed to Tehran’s prioritization of supporting terrorist activities over its citizens as a key factor contributing to Iran’s crumbling economy and declining living conditions.

“These sanctions target a crucial aspect of how Iran funds the oppression of its own citizens,” he stated, adding that the Treasury will keep an eye on “tens of millions of dollars that the regime has plundered and is trying to move to banks outside of Iran.”

The Treasury’s announcement highlighted that these sanctions were implemented in the context of the Iranian regime’s violent crackdown on peaceful protests and its complete internet blackout aimed at obscuring injustices against the Iranian populace. The sanctions specifically target ships and companies involved in exporting vast amounts of Iranian oil, profits from which are funneled into terrorism, weapons programs, and security services instead of basic necessities for the citizens.

The State Department reinforced this move through a statement from Chief Deputy Press Secretary Thomas Piggott, asserting that the U.S. aims to deprive Tehran of resources that could be utilized to further suppress its people during a time of escalating inflation, inadequate infrastructure, and worsening shortages of power and water.

The U.S. Central Command also spread the word about the sanctions across various X accounts, emphasizing the regime’s efforts to communicate important information to audiences both inside and outside Iran.

Reports from Israeli media indicated that renewed tensions with Iran have led several international airlines to cancel flights to Middle East destinations, including Israel, over fears of further escalation in the region.

This intense economic pressure is coinciding with escalating military movements, as President Trump warned Tehran about its treatment of protestors and noted a “huge fleet” of U.S. forces heading toward the area “just in case.” He mentioned, “We have a lot of ships heading in that direction just in case. Maybe we won’t have to use it.”

As protests in Iran progress into their third week, estimates of the death toll continue to rise. UN Special Rapporteur Mai Sato cited conservative estimates of over 5,000 deaths, while information from doctors using Starlink suggests the actual number could exceed 20,000, with tens of thousands arrested disproportionately under a near-total internet blackout.

Bessent previously remarked that the Iranian leadership appears to be “rats fleeing a sinking ship,” frantically transferring stolen assets overseas. He emphasized that the regime’s ongoing decisions only exacerbate its economic and political demise, further intensified by Trump’s maximum pressure strategy.
