Trump’s Stance on Drug Cartels

In a recent interview, President Trump stated that U.S. ground attacks on drug cartels could take place “anywhere,” including countries like Mexico and other parts of Latin America.

When questioned about the possibility of airstrikes on land in nations such as Mexico, Venezuela, or Colombia, he replied, “It could happen anywhere.”

The Department of Justice has reported that most illegal drugs in the U.S. are smuggled primarily through the southern border with Mexico, with some also coming from Canada.

President Trump highlighted the effectiveness of military operations, claiming they had eliminated 97 percent of drugs from the seas. He expressed a desire for similar success in combating drug trafficking on land.

This announcement follows recent U.S. actions targeting Venezuela, which included the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are known for their involvement in drug trafficking.

Additionally, the Trump administration is pressing Mexico to allow U.S. military forces to operate within its borders to tackle this issue. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly rejected the idea, arguing that she doesn’t support military invasion and believes the U.S. isn’t seriously pursuing it. “We have said no, firstly to protect our sovereignty and secondly because we don’t need it,” she insisted.

In response to ongoing concerns about drug trafficking, Mexico is stepping up its own efforts. Security Minister Omar García Halfchi recently announced the extradition of 37 additional captured cartel members to the United States, bringing the total to 92 this month.
