Minneapolis Mayor and Senators Call for ICE Removal After Shooting
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, along with several Minnesota lawmakers, urged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to remove individuals from the state following a shooting incident on Saturday. This happened shortly after a deadly altercation in the city.
At a press conference, Frey mentioned, “The City of Minneapolis has filed a declaration regarding the shootings and is asking a judge to consider a temporary restraining order on Monday. This order would provide immediate relief and support, helping to halt an operation that is causing significant distress in our city, leading to multiple shootings and tragic losses.” He attributed the current chaos to ICE and the previous Trump administration.
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) echoed Frey’s sentiments, stating, “Our message is very clear: We need to get ICE out of Minnesota.” Klobuchar claimed that the presence of ICE agents, which outnumbered local police three to one, contributes to the danger in the community. She pointed to the recent murders as evidence that ICE operations are not making the city safer.
Two people, including a mother of three and a nurse, were tragically killed during the incident linked to ICE enforcement actions. Klobuchar noted, “This situation is completely abnormal and it’s creating an imbalance in our city.” She placed significant blame on the Trump administration for the current state of affairs, stating that Minneapolis feels “under siege.”
She remarked, “I warned them that more deaths would occur if they continued down this path,” adding that it’s vital for citizens to pressure their representatives to change the current situation.
On his part, Frey requested assistance from the National Guard to support the local police force, emphasizing the need for their help as they navigate through this chaotic atmosphere. “Most protests have been peaceful, and we hope to keep it that way,” he stated.
Frey also urged the President to refrain from escalating chaos in response to Trump’s actions. Klobuchar criticized ICE’s expanded role in Minnesota, suggesting that its mission exceeds what should be a focus on violent criminals and fraud investigations.
Frey later announced on social media that the city is seeking a temporary restraining order to protect its residents, calling for urgent action.
Reports indicated that during the ICE operation that led to the shooting, the agents attempted to disarm a man who was said to have been armed and reportedly resisted violently.
