Ben Shelton signs with Camera USA until it reverses after his Australian Open victory

During the Australian Open, American tennis players were approached by reporters who wanted to hear their thoughts on representing the U.S. and their impressions of Australia.

Interestingly, Ben Shelton seemed eager to share his views without needing a prompt.

After securing his victory over Valentin Bachelot in the tournament’s third round, Shelton participated in the customary autograph signing. At that moment, he communicated a powerful message: “Until America falls back.” This phrase resonates with current slang that emphasizes steadfast loyalty to a cause.

Other American players, including Taylor Fritz, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Amanda Anisimova, and Naomi Osaka, were asked similar questions by the same reporter.

When Anisimova was specifically questioned about her feelings toward representing her country amidst the ongoing issues in the U.S., her response was quite direct: “I don’t think that matters.”

John Isner and Tennis Sandgren voiced their criticism of the reporter on social media.

Isner remarked, “Popular opinion: Ask players tennis questions at tennis tournaments. This is so lame.”

Similarly, Sandgren added, “I’m a bug reporter. If you’re talented, write an article for The Economist. If you’re not, ask her how she felt about her backhand and move on.”

Gauff was also queried about her thoughts on the “current state of the United States,” especially one year into President Donald Trump’s second term.

Her response reflected hope: “I hope that our country will be more peaceful and that there will be more kindness as we talk to each other about different topics.”

She continued, expressing her fatigue with discussing these issues as a Black woman in the country, recounting the challenges faced by marginalized communities. “I know that all I can do is donate and speak out, and I’m doing my best to do that,” she stated.

Gauff concluded by referencing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his call to keep pushing forward, even in the face of current challenges.
