Trump and Noem criticize Dems Tim Walz and Jacob Frey for 'provoking' protesters such as Alex Pretti

Political Tensions Rise in Minnesota

In Washington, there’s been significant backlash from President Trump and his administration toward Democratic officials in Minnesota, particularly Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. They accuse these leaders of “inciting” protests that target Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), linking the unrest in the Twin Cities to a recent investigation into widespread welfare fraud involving the Somali immigrant community.

Kristi Noem, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, announced a robust immigration enforcement initiative in Minnesota, referencing the shocking welfare scandal. She noted, “The level of resistance we saw in Minneapolis was unprecedented. In fact, the governor even encouraged people at a press conference to take to the streets and challenge law enforcement,” during her appearance on Fox News.

General Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol Commander, expressed unease about the rhetoric from local Democratic leaders following the shooting of a photographer named Alex Preti. He questioned, “Was he the victim influenced by the inflammatory remarks of Mayor Frey and Governor Walz?” on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

In the wake of the shooting incident, which left President Trump fuming, he condemned both Frey and Walz. On social media, he stated, “Mayors and governors are inciting insurrection with their reckless comments! They ought to focus on billions of dollars that have been stolen from Minnesota’s citizens.” His choice of words raised eyebrows regarding his possible consideration of invoking the Insurrection Act to send military forces into the city, a power last used during the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

When asked about whether to utilize the Insurrection Act, Noem directed the question back to Trump. Meanwhile, Preti, 37, carried a legally permitted 9mm handgun and was subdued by multiple Border Patrol agents before the fatal shooting occurred. Videos captured the moment an officer removed Preti’s gun before shots were fired, leading to his death.

Both officials acknowledged that investigations are ongoing, yet neither confirmed whether Preti might have had other weapons available when he was restrained. Reflecting on the personal impact of the incident, Noem remarked, “I feel deep sympathy for his family. Losing a child is unimaginable,” but added, “We can’t overlook those who obstruct law enforcement efforts, especially bearing arms.” Earlier this month, events surrounding ICE triggered nationwide protests after another incident involved a woman driving her SUV toward officers.

The backlash to Preti’s shooting has been intense, with Democrats and some conservatives expressing varying reactions. The National Rifle Association (NRA) responded strongly after a federal prosecutor suggested that carrying a weapon around law enforcement scenarios could lead to being shot. They called for a prudent evaluation before making broad statements about law-abiding citizens.

The NRA echoed the concerns raised by Trump, Noem, and Bovino, asserting, “For months, radical progressive politicians like Tim Walz have instigated violence against officers simply performing their duties.” They emphasized that such incendiary rhetoric can tragically culminate in violence.

Attempts to obtain comments from representatives for Walz and Frey have been made. Walz reaffirmed Minnesota’s dedication to law and order by stating, “We believe in peace,” and added that President Trump should withdraw untrained agents from the state before further harm occurs.
