Minnesota shooting prompts criticism from Steve Kerr towards the media

Steve Kerr Addresses Recent Shooting in Minneapolis

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr spoke out on Sunday regarding a shooting by Border Patrol in Minneapolis, which resulted in the postponement of the team’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. This incident took place on Saturday, claiming the life of a man named Alex J. Preti, who was shot after allegedly confronting officers during a Department of Homeland Security operation in the area. This marks the second shooting incident involving a federal officer this January.

Kerr took issue with how the media covered the tragic event. He expressed concern about the current state of the country, stating, “My concern as Americans is that we’re not perfect. We were never perfect.” Despite these issues, he believes the ideals that should guide the nation have remained foundational. He urged people, regardless of their political affiliations, to remember the core values that come hand in hand with the Constitution and citizenship. The notion of caring for one another, he argued, has never been more crucial, especially as extremism seems to permeate society.

The coach went on to highlight how divisive the media can be, often driven by profit and misinformation. He pointed out that it’s difficult for people to reconcile the different narratives and realities that exist, stating, “These are confusing times to be alive and to be an American.” He urged everyone to remember those Constitutional values and what they mean for the treatment of fellow citizens.

Kerr also expressed sadness for what’s happening in Minneapolis, a city he has always admired and loved. “I feel for this city,” he said, noting the community’s pain and the cloud of sadness that has descended upon it. He emphasized that the loss of life and the resulting grief for families are, ultimately, the most pressing concerns. Having talked with Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch, both agreed that postponing the game was the right decision.

“The general feeling is just one of sadness for Minneapolis,” Kerr remarked. He mentioned how the people here genuinely care about one another and are trying to help amidst the turmoil. This community spirit makes the current situation all the more heartbreaking.

This latest shooting comes shortly after another incident where a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, an event also marred by controversy. Kerr’s thoughts give voice to the broader emotional landscape as communities continue to grapple with loss and complexity in these turbulent times.
