Kristen Stewart Contemplates Moving Abroad Amidst Political Climate

Kristen Stewart, the actress known for her role in “Twilight,” has recently expressed thoughts about relocating outside the U.S., citing President Donald Trump as a significant factor in her decision. In a recent interview, she mentioned feeling constrained creatively, leading her to focus on filmmaking opportunities in Europe.

Her first directorial endeavor, “The Chronology of Water,” was filmed in Latvia, a location she chose partly because she believed the project could not be realized in America. Stewart has voiced her concerns regarding Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on films made overseas, labeling the situation as “horrifying” for the film industry.

Stewart has been quite vocal about her frustrations with the entertainment sector, pointing out that it often feels like a “capitalist hellhole” that generates obstacles for artists. She commented, “Reality is completely breaking down under the Trump administration,” but also pointed out the need for creating an alternative reality that aligns more closely with their ideals.

She divides her time between Los Angeles and New York but has hinted that she may not remain in the U.S. for much longer. “You can’t work for free there,” she remarked, adding that while she doesn’t want to abandon her home country, she’s eager to create films in Europe and distribute them to American audiences.

In September, Trump proposed a 100% tariff on movies made outside the United States, claiming that the American film industry was being undermined by foreign productions. He likened it to “stealing candy from babies” and specifically called out California’s government as ineffective.

In response to this proposal, California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office labeled the suggestion as “100% stupid,” noting that it would cause significant harm to the film industry. So far, Trump’s tariff plan hasn’t made much headway.

Stewart described difficulties in bringing her film project to life since announcing it at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Reflecting on her creative process, she noted, “It’s hard to make a movie, but it shouldn’t be this way.” She emphasized the importance of finding new avenues for artistic expression within a constraining system.

Her history with President Trump is interesting, dating back to when she was involved in a high-profile relationship with Robert Pattinson. During that time, Trump publicly criticized her over a controversial breakup, suggesting Pattinson should leave her.

Recently, Stewart has criticized the entertainment industry for marginalizing women’s voices, stating her belief that it should undergo a complete overhaul. In a discussion with The New York Times, she mentioned the overwhelming barriers that artists face, and her hope for a system where creative expression is not stifled.
