NFL winners and losers: The Super Bowl heads toward an unavoidable defeat

Reflecting on Recent Super Bowls and the Upcoming Showdown

Over the past decade, football fans have been fortunate. Whether you have a favorite team or wish for a different mix of players, one can’t deny the excitement. Since 2016, the average victory margin in the Super Bowl has been around 9.8 points, with two games even heading into overtime.

However, this era of competitive balance seems poised to shift in 2026. Signs point to a potentially overwhelming Super Bowl matchup ahead, possibly echoing the lopsided victory of Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 when the Seahawks crushed the Broncos 43-8. It’s looking bleak for the Patriots.

Yet, it’s impressive that New England has made it this far. Coming from a rough 4-13 record last year to now vying for the Super Bowl is quite a turnaround. Players like Drake Maye are showing promise, Trevellon Henderson appears to be a standout running back, and Mike Vrabel is defying critics doubting his leadership. Their progress is notable, and the reactions from rival fans probably illustrate just how significant this turnaround is.

But, there’s still no signature playoff win that solidifies the Patriots as a top-tier team. They seem to be benefiting from an AFC that isn’t particularly strong this year, with every little chance seemingly falling in their favor. It’s crucial to note that the Patriots have certainly faced challenges — with C.J. Stroud navigating quarterback duties like a rookie and narrowly escaping tough games against the Bills and a Denver team that was stumbling without its starting quarterback.

Moreover, New England’s performance has left something to be desired. While Maye thrived during the regular season, he struggled in the postseason. His throws seemed off, particularly noted during the tight game against Denver where he almost turned the ball over. Denver’s defense is commendable; still, a mere 86 passing yards on 21 attempts isn’t cutting it at this level.

Now think of the Seahawks. If the Patriots faced struggles against the Broncos, the Seahawks are performing at a higher level. Their pressure tactics are crafted to unsettle young quarterbacks like Maye. The Seahawks’ defensive strategy involves layering pressure, which hinders opposing offenses from achieving explosive plays. Against the Rams, mixed results appeared: while Stafford managed some significant plays, it wasn’t as dominant as one might hope.

On the flip side, Sam Darnold’s story has taken an intriguing turn. Initially viewed as a fluke, his resurgence has become one of success. He’s shown better control and determination throughout the season, leading his team when plans faltered.

Darnold is set to become the first quarterback from USC to start in a Super Bowl. That’s a notable accomplishment.

Winner: Christian Gonzalez

Neither the Patriots’ defense nor Gonzalez had a flawless outing, but he rose to the occasion when necessary. With a sack and interception under pressure, he played a crucial role in a tightly contested game.

It’s disappointing for Broncos fans that they couldn’t see their team at its peak. Jarrett Stidham didn’t perform poorly, but he lacked the fourth-quarter brilliance once displayed by Bo Nix last season. Based on recent performances, it’s plausible to think Denver would’ve emerged victorious in the AFC Championship had Nix been at the helm.

Loser: Atlanta Falcons

While both Super Bowl coaches were considered, the Falcons opted for a different choice altogether.
