Students in NYC face difficulties logging into virtual class after Mamdani declines Snow Day

On Monday, many students and their resolute parents in New York City faced difficulties logging into school as districts opted for problematic remote learning instead of a traditional snow day.

Parents and kids attempting to join virtual classes via Google Chrome encountered error messages that left them unable to sign in. Some faced additional obstacles since the school had sent home Chromebooks specifically for virtual learning.

“We were rushing to make everything work,” one parent expressed their frustration. They noted, “These issues should have been sorted out by now. Thankfully, I had my own device to log in because my school Chromebook wouldn’t connect.”

Approximately 400,000 students managed to log in for remote classes Monday morning, according to Mayor Zoran Mamdani. However, this meant that around one-fifth of students were absent, with about 500,000 kids expected to participate that day.

“It was pretty much what I expected,” a parent shared, recounting the struggle of keeping young children engaged during lengthy Zoom sessions. “There are problems, but overall it can’t be labeled a failure,” they remarked, reflecting on the absurdities of enforced guidelines, like wondering if eating during the session was acceptable or whether to turn off their camera.

Superintendent Kamal Samuels described the transition to digital learning as a success, although he didn’t acknowledge the login issues that many faced. “Students were able to quickly log into their virtual classroom and start teaching right away,” he stated.

In the Blue Room at City Hall, school leaders echoed this sentiment, calling it a positive start to the day. However, it was noted that some older students had already been given scheduled days off for teacher preparation, meaning nearly half were not expected to attend class.
