Trump Sends Tom Homan to Lead ICE Operations in Minnesota
Former acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf lauded President Donald Trump’s choice to dispatch “border czar” Tom Homan to address the unrest in Minneapolis during an appearance on Monday’s “The Story with Martha McCollum.”
Wolf described the decision as a “stroke of genius,” asserting that Homan is well-suited for the task given his background as a career law enforcement officer. He emphasized Homan’s capability to navigate the complexities of the situation, aiming to reduce violence while allowing ICE to fulfill its mission.
On Monday, President Trump revealed plans to send Homan to Minnesota, indicating that Homan would report “directly to me” to oversee ICE operations in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
“Tonight, I’m sending Tom Homan to Minnesota. He’s not directly involved there, but he’s familiar with the community. Tom will be tough yet fair and will report directly to me,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform.
During a press briefing, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt highlighted Homan’s role in facilitating cooperation between local and state officials. She noted Homan received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2015 for his contributions under former President Barack Obama.
Bovino Replaced by Homan
Some critics interpret Trump’s move as a strategic shift, questioning ICE’s leadership amid complaints regarding its handling of the disturbances and comments from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on the shooting death of activist Alex Preti.
Preti, a nurse, was shot by a Border Patrol agent during a demonstration against Trump’s immigration policies. Noem suggested that Preti seemed to have arrived “with the intention of causing maximum harm.”
Critics disputed Noem’s characterization of the incident. However, Leavitt reaffirmed the President’s confidence in Secretary Noem.
When asked whether changes to personnel might occur, Wolf acknowledged that it’s a possibility. He expressed that law enforcement officers at the Department of Homeland Security, particularly from ICE and CBP, hold a strong supportive view of President Trump. “They appreciate that he backs them,” Wolf noted. Yet, he expressed concern about whether their operations were becoming politicized, insisting that, for many, it is simply about enforcing the law regards immigration.
Potential for Collaboration
Wolf suggested Homan’s presence might encourage collaboration between federal and local law enforcement. He articulated the importance of local law enforcement partnering with ICE to effectively apprehend criminal illegal aliens. Ideally, Homan could create a stronger cooperative environment that would benefit all parties involved.
