Rangers Secure Hard-Fought Win Amid Trade Talks
The Rangers had largely steered clear of this kind of victory throughout the season. They’ve consistently found players who can score at home, but they also tend to struggle with maintaining leads. However, they managed to turn the tide when it mattered most during their latest game.
A few hours after indications of a potential trade deadline sale surfaced, the Rangers triumphed with a 4-3 victory. Will Borgen connected for the game-tying goal, while Matthew Robertson netted the game-winner in overtime. Contributions also came from Will Cuylle and JT Miller, who added two more goals to the tally.
This marked Jonathan Quick’s first win since stepping in for the injured Igor Shesterkin. The circumstances surrounding the victory unfolded just after Carson Soucy’s injury prompted roster changes related to a finalized trade with the Islanders.
In the hours preceding their defeat, the team seemed to realize the implications of the looming March 6 trade deadline. They were on the verge of sending Soucy—who joined the squad as a third-round pick earlier this season—to the Islanders. Defenseman Connor McKee was called up from AHL Hartford to fill the seventh defenseman spot, while Urho Vaakanainen took Soucy’s place in the lineup. Reports indicated that Soucy might be returning to the team in the near future.
Vaakanainen seized his chance and made an impact early, scoring just 9:45 into the first period. The Rangers took the lead when Quill redirected a point shot off a faceoff. Boston’s Elias Lindholm quickly leveled the score, but JT Miller responded shortly after, regaining the lead for the Rangers with a goal that marked his third in three games.
It was clear the Rangers were eager to create chances, especially amidst a season where their record had dipped to just 5 wins, 13 losses, and 4 draws. But then, as has happened several times before, they faced setbacks.
Lindholm capitalized on a rebound, allowing Boston to retake the lead with an off-angle shot from Morgan Geeky. Before Geekie’s goal, the Rangers had ample opportunities to equalize during a 5-on-3 situation lasting 37 seconds, but they couldn’t convert.
Borgen finally found the back of the net, scoring his third goal of the season by pushing the puck past goaltender Joonas Korpisalo through a crowded front of the net, which tied the game.
With hints of roster changes looming, the team celebrated a themed night commemorating the 100th anniversary of their franchise, showcasing past players who contributed to their 1994 Stanley Cup triumph. Despite the evening’s festivities, the Rangers demonstrated how much further they still have to go to reclaim that glory.
Ultimately, those last two goals offered a rare moment of excitement on an otherwise complex night.
